Change over
When the time comes around for registrar change over - we all have our own perspective on the situation.
The registrar is sad to move on, having become comfortable with the work environs and personailities where they have spent 6,12 or (due to covid) 24 months!! Meanwhile, they are also excited yet anxious about their new positions in distant hospitals, and the opportunities and challenges that will bring.
The consultant is sad to see all the training they have been doing to educate and prepare younger doctors / surgeons move on, and likely never come back again. Also intrepid about the skills that new junior staff will hold. Will this be a year of having to be more hands on, which can be a drain on energy and time? Will we be able to learn something new about medicine, our communication or ourselves through these new interactions?
The patient however is the reason we are all industriously working in this field. They should feel just as supported in their healthcare journey, with same expected outcomes and no increased risk of complications during this time of change.
It takes some settling to occur as people become oriented, and adjusted to their new scenarios. Be mindful of the changes that you are feeling and experiencing in yourself and those around you. Always have the patients best interests at heart and you will be a leader, a doctor and a safe adjuster.
